Govt expects over Rs 300 crore in taxes from IPL-4

NEW DELHI: Government is expected to collect more than Rs 300 crore in taxes from the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League T20 cricket tournament which will begin in April this year.

According to sources, the taxes would be obtained as Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) from the remuneration paid to players, umpires, coaches, commentators among others under the I-T category while advertising, marketing and consultancy services will be taxed under the service tax bracket.

As per an estimate calculated by the Revenue department, the IPL will fetch about Rs 150 crore each under the direct (income tax) and indirect (service tax) categories.

The T20 tournament is being played from April 8 to May 22 in various Indian cities with foreign and domestic players being paid large amounts of money. Almost 60 matches would be played in the fourth edition of the tournament.

The latest edition is coming at a time when the earlier versions of the T20 tournament are being probed by agencies like I-T department and Enforcement Directorate for "taxation aspects of transactions relating to the IPL" including the flow of money from offshore destinations into the tournament.

The government had received Rs 91 crore as taxes under the TDS category from the IPL's first edition, while the second edition which was hosted in South Africa had fetched the department "few crores" as income tax.

The third edition brought about Rs 400 crore under TDS category for the government.

The Revenue department expects a rise in taxes this year following a last year I-T department order which had termed the BCCI a commercial organisation and not a charitable one and also a notification in 2008 had brought sports-persons under the professionals category.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has filed an appeal against the I-T order.

Under the service tax category, advertising, marketing and consultancy services are taxed, the official said.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) notification in 2008 had expanded the scope of 'professionals' under the Income Tax Act, 1961 which included sports-persons, umpires, referees, coaches, trainers, team physicians and physiotherapists, event managers, commentators, anchors and sports columnists.

The notification categorised their services as 'professional services.' Such services are taxed in accordance with Section 194J of the I-T Act.

How do cheergirls help cricket, Parliamentary standing committee asks BCCI

NEW DELHI: How do cheergirls promote the cause of cricket? Why are players auctioned like "gladiators" in IPL system of cricket?

These were some of the questions that members of the Parliamentary standing committee on finance posed to top BCCI officials, including its president Shashank Manohar, secretary N Srinivasan and IPL commissioner Chirayu Amin during a hearing on financial transactions related to the conduct of IPL.

While the BCCI top brass claimed that IPL would help the cause of cricket and attract more talent, it was at loss to explain the role of cheergirls, sources said.

It is learnt that the BCCI officials put the onus of introducing the concept on sacked IPL chief Lalit Modi.

Some of the members of the committee, headed by BJP MP Yashwant Sinha, also questioned the concept of auctioning the players like "gladiators". They said it reminded them of the Roman empire when men were sold to bidders on the basis of their physical strength.

Manohar, Srinivasan and Amin were quizzed by the MPs for about two-and-a-half hours about the alleged FEMA violations.

The BCCI was asked about the funding pattern of the highly popular IPL and the methods adopted for payment to foreign and Indian players.

The committee also sought details of the expenses incurred on the conduct of the second edition of the Twenty20 tournament in South Africa in 2009.

The IPL was held in the African nation in 2009 due to a clash of dates with the general elections in India.

Ruthless South Africa win by 135 runs

ndia had to survive the new ball if they were going to make a fist of chasing 290 but they were gasping for breath within 11 overs, after slipping to 43 for 4, and never quite recovered. South Africa had threatened twice to run away to a mammoth total in their innings. India pulled them back on both occasions to keep the target below 300, but the chase went nowhere. South Africa were 82 for 2 in the 14th over before Munaf Patel removed Hashim Amla to slow the innings down, but the hosts bounced back to reach 213 for 3 in the 36th over, when AB de Villiers fell and India clawed their way back once again.

The ball was expected to do a bit under lights and the top order, barring Virat Kohli, collapsed without much fight. The dismissal of Yuvraj Singh perfectly captured South Africa's dominance on a bouncy track. Morne Morkel got one to kick up and jag away from Yuvraj, who got his feet into an awful tangle, and ended up stabbing the ball to second slip.

It was that kind of a night: the India batsmen struggled to adapt to the conditions and they went down in a heap. M Vijay was trapped in front in the first over of the innings by a full delivery from Dale Steyn and Sachin Tendulkar perished to a pre-determined move to shuffle across his stumps. There was a short fine-leg in place for Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Tendulkar moved across to drag a short-of-length delivery past that fielder but only succeeded in top-edging a dolly to Steyn.

India recovered from 13 for 2 to reach 41 without further damage but a double strike by Morne Morkel pushed them further back. Morne had hustled and hurried Rohit Sharma into having a few injudicious wafts outside off but Rohit was eventually unlucky to be given out, caught behind by AB de Villiers. It was a gem of a delivery that kicked up and straightened just outside off and Rohit hit his pad with the bat as he pushed inside the line but the umpire mistook the sound for an edge.

Yuvraj proved a walking wicket in these seaming conditions and India were left staring down the barrel after MS Dhoni's run out just before the half-way mark. Kohli hit a straight drive but the bowler Wayne Parnell got a hand on it to accidentally run out Dhoni and leave India with a mountain to climb. Kohli hung around for a while but once he fell to Steyn, the lower order just crumbled.

South Africa's bowlers blew away India but it was their batsmen who set up the win. It was a fascinating late afternoon at Durban after Amla's exit. There was an imminent threat of a collapse in the air: South Africa had a long tail, JP Duminy can be an iffy starter against spin and the ball was starting to stop on the batsman a touch. de Villiers and Duminy initially batted like men who were aware of these threats. They added 47 runs in a little over 12 overs and the hosts had reached 132 for 3 in 25.4 overs when a single shot turned things around for them. de Villiers charged down the track to Harbhajan Singh and didn't quite seem to connect well, but his sliced golf shot sent the ball into the screaming fans beyond long-off. When Duminy slog swept Yuvraj Singh for a six in the next over, it was official: they had broken free of the shackles.

They followed it up with a smart move: they took the Batting Powerplay in the 28th over and looted 45 runs off the five overs. de Villiers made 28 of them, with a hat-trick of fours - a pull, a skillful inside-out hit over cover, and a slice over point - against Ashish Nehra in the final Powerplay over to leave South Africa sitting pretty at 192 for 3.

Things were looking dire for India and Dhoni decided to bring in part-time spinners Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina. de Villiers pulled Rohit straight to deep midwicket in the 36th over, David Miller played inside the line to lose his off stump against Raina in the 39th, and then in the 42nd Duminy missed a reverse sweep and was trapped in front by Rohit. The tail didn't have the skill to add too many and South Africa meandered along to their final score.

It was quite a contrast to the frenetic start to the innings, with Amla going after Nehra in some style. The bat-speed was rapid, and time and again he played on the up and through the line. There were some trademark cover drives on a stretched front foot and the highlight was the hat-trick of fours he unleashed against Nehra in the seventh over. Amla whacked a short ball to the midwicket boundary, then walked down the pitch to lace a length delivery to the left of mid-off before he pinged that region with an off drive. There was a caressed straight drive for three runs in the same over and he put away a couple of slower ones from Munaf for boundaries. His dismissal put pressure on the middle order but de Villiers and Duminy ensured that their bowlers had a score to defend.

Don’t know why Deccan Chargers did not bid for me: Adam Gilchrist

New Kings XI Punjab skipper Adam Gilchrist, who captained Deccan Chargers to title in 2009, tells DNA that the image of the league has taken a beating because of the recent controversies.

So you will be back in India soon.
The IPL and India have been very kind to me and I enjoy coming to India. I’m going to spend more time in India and will look to promote the competition and make friends there. The IPL 4 is going to be another exciting season of cricket. Obviously, I’m now going to be a Kings XI Punjab player, the prospect of which is exciting.

What do you say about the Deccan Chargers?
I must say that I enjoyed my time at Deccan Chargers. I loved playing for the team and have many fond memories of my time there. Obviously, my main memory would be winning the IPL 2. I’m proud to have delivered a championship title to the Chargers’ franchise in my time.

But they did not bid for you.
They obviously did not feel that they needed me anymore. I’m not sure what the reasons are. No one in the franchise has ever spoken to me over this or told me that I wasn’t required. They don’t have to. The KXIP are keen to have me and I’m grateful to them. I’m really looking forward to building a new team that will be successful.

Are you disappointed that DC management did not inform you?
That is not for me to comment. That does not mean too much for me, anyway. I wish to say ‘Thank You’ to the people of Hyderabad and Deccan Chargers’ supporters. It is sad that I have to move but that is a franchise decision. I look forward to going back to Hyderabad and meeting up with my friends there.

You are one of the few veterans who commanded a good price while Indian players of your age and experience were rejected.
Well, I think you have to ask the franchises about this. I put my heart and soul into the Deccan team to make it a successful unit. We were very successful, having won once and reached semifinals once. I think the key is hard work and good man-management. The understanding of various personalities and cultures in an IPL team is very important. We need to ensure that all the cultures are respected and everyone in the side feels welcomed. Not just as the captain, but I’m also hoping to do well as a player too and score some runs.

Is it difficult to change loyalties?
Look, I feel I’m a professional. In the IPL setup, it’s necessary to be committed to all parties, franchises, sponsors, the team and the fans. I really look forward to getting a whole new band of supporters in Punjab.

What do you make of the new team?
Like every team, it is a real mix of players from different backgrounds. We have to get some good balance of youngsters there. It’s almost a fresh start for everybody. That’s very exciting.

Which of the other nine teams look strong?
I think all the other nine squads are very dangerous. I have always said that in IPL, any team can beat any side on a given day. It can be very interesting to see what the final squads are.

How has the league changed over the last three years?
The addition of two new teams makes the league more interesting. I understand every team doesn’t play everybody twice. The finals’format is going to be a bit different with play-offs. There is a lot more to play for in the last four stage as well. I’ve played every single game for Chargers in the first three seasons. I’m very proud of the fact that I have guided young players of the Chargers side. It’s a bit disappointing but that is part of the IPL. It is always changing. I now look to change myself as a KXIP player. I’m going to take that role very seriously and want to have a lot of fun doing that.

What about the IPL vis-a-vis international cricket?
It had an impact. T20 cricket had a greater impact on the game and the IPL is more international than an Indian competition. The financial rewards and opportunities are immense but I’m sure all the players taking part in the IPL will agree that they will love to play for their country first.

Do you think the image of the league has taken a beating because of the developments since IPL-3?
Yes. I think so. I think a lot of people are very concerned about some of the governance, regulations and guidelines of the league. I think everyone wants to see how the new management will be able to correct that. So it will be seen how they will showcase the best talent in the world.

Are you anyway worried about your new franchise’s problems and legal troubles?
No. Because they would not have come back into the league if they are not on a strong legal footing. I’ve full confidence in them and look forward to building a successful team and a successful franchise. I will see the team is well-respected by the players and the world.

IPL: Royals sign four uncapped players

Mumbai: Rajasthan Royals have signed four uncapped players from the state Ranji Trophy squad - Deepak Chahar, Ashok Maneria, Aakash Chopra and Dishant Yagnik - for the fourth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Royals, during the two-day auction over the weekend, also bought Rajasthan's pace spearhead Pankaj Singh, the highest wicket taker in the ongoing Ranji season.

Pace sensation Chahar, 18, took eight wickets in his first-class debut and was chief destroyer in bowling out Hyderabad for the lowest ever Ranji total of 21.
Left-handed batsman Maneria was the captain of the U-19 team that toured Australia in 2009 and for the U-19 World Cup in New Zealand.
Chopra, a former India Test opener and Delhi skipper moved to Rajasthan this season and has been instrumental in the team's superb performance that took them to the final.
Chopra has played for India but according to IPL rules if a player has not played for India in the last five years, he will come under the uncapped category.
Former India player Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who is Rajasthan's captain, has been approached by the Kochi team.
"We are delighted to announce the signings of the Rajasthan players. It underlines our commitment to cricket in the state of Rajasthan and we will continue to work closely with the local Cricket Associations who have done such a fine job of developing these players," said Sean Morris, CEO, Rajasthan Royals.
"We see huge opportunity for our local players to further improve their skills through joining the IPL team full of international stars who will add to their cricketing experience."

I will miss Chennai and Dhoni: Murali

New Delhi: Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan says he will miss his previous IPL team Chennai Super Kings and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni but is excited to play for the Kochi franchisee, the new entrants in the Twenty20 league.
Muralitharan, who had played a crucial role in CSK's title-triumph in IPL 3 and Champions League last year, was signed up by team Kochi for $1.1 million at the two-day auction in Bangalore.

"I played with them for three years and have several happy memories with the team. My wife is also from Chennai and she is upset with this change but it happens in the game. I will miss Chennai, my teammates and miraculous captain Dhoni," Muralitharan said.
"Chennai had an excellent captain, a wonderful team and tremendous support. I enjoyed playing for them and last year was memorable in which we won the IPL and Champions league. I have taken a lot of wickets for them," said the veteran, who has 515 ODI and 800 Test wickets in his kitty.
"Kochi is a new venture and we will have a new captain and new targets. I am quite excited about this. We will start afresh and try to give our best. I hope to have a home like atmosphere in Kochi as well. I hope that people will understand my language (Tamil) in Kochi also," he added.
The spin wizard, who took 40 wickets in 40 matches for Chennai in the last three seasons, said he wants to extend his IPL career for a few more years.
"I want to play IPL for the next two or three more years. I will try to perform to the best of my abilities and experience. Team Kochi has put so much faith on me and I will not disappoint them," said the ace off spinner.
Talking about Kochi's combination of players, Muralitharan said they need some more young Indian players. "Kochi has experienced players like Mahela Jayawardhane, Brendon McCullum, VVS Laxman and Sreesanth. Now it is necessary to have some talented Indian youngsters," he said.
When asked about now CSK spinner Suraj Randiv's wish to learn the art of Doosra from him, the ace bowler said that he is willing to share his experience with the young bowlers.
"Suraj is a good bowler and future of Sri Lanka Cricket. I will give him important tips. More than the franchise, he is the one who will be benefited by playing for them. I am willing to share my experience and knowledge with everyone," said Murali.
Asked about his future plans, he said, "You don't know what is in store for you. I will be involved with cricket for sure but not as a coach with any national team. May be at a shorter scale."
Talking about the snub the IPL franchisees meted out to Saurav Ganguly and Sanath Jayasuriya, he said, "This is franchise's decision. I don't know what is their thinking and calculations. I am also surprised but they are great players and will remain that."
Muralitharan, who quit Test cricket in July 2010, said it is his dream to bid adieu to ODI cricket with another World Cup Trophy in his hands.
"We are playing in the sub-continent. India will be hot favourites but Sri Lanka is also a good team and we have played well recently. I hope that we can win the tournament.
"I am happy that my name is there in the team. I want to bid adieu with the title triumph. I consider myself lucky as I was the part of 1996 winning team also," he said.

Ganguly is like my younger brother: SRK

New Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders' co-owner Shah Rukh Khan on Wednesday said leaving out former India captain Sourav Ganguly from the team was a decision taken by the "cricketing brains" of the franchise and not by him.
Ganguly, who captained KKR in the inaugural and 2009 season, was completely ignored in two rounds of players' auction for the fourth edition starting April 8.

The snub to the flamboyant batsman triggered angry protests in Kolkata. Khan pleaded with the fans to understand the compulsions behind the decision.
"It's with very heavy heart that such decisions are taken. I don't do cricketing decisions anymore because in the first year when I did it, I have not done very well," Khan said.
"I feel very sad for my team, for the city that my team represents. I feel very sad for the state. I feel very bad for my children. So all the decisions are now taken by the cricketing brains. The main aim is to perform well since in the last three years we have performed badly and I am sure that Dada also wishes that we do well," he added.
Khan said the team, which has bought Gautam Gambhir for mind boggling Rs 11 crore, cannot be about one individual.
"Dada is like my younger brother. The team does not consist of one or two people. It is a team of 20. We used to feel very bad about our loss. We have even cried when we didn't win in India as well as in South Africa.
"We only want to win the championship for Kolkata. We all want to do that including Dada. We have to put sadness, issues
and thoughts behind sometimes to achieve a goal. We all have to make some sacrifices we understand that," he told a news channel.
Khan said the controversies should now end and KKR should be allowed to function smoothly.
"In season one, we had a lot of controversies and in the third IPL season, we had so many problems so my message to everyone is to give me a chance to run KKR without controversies. Let me play the game with the spirit of the game," he said.

Davy Jacobs eager to open with Tendulkar

Just over three-quarters of a million dollars wound up separating Warriors team-mates Johan Botha and Davy Jacobs after the first day of the 2011 IPL player auction. Botha was snapped up for the massive amount of US$950,000 by the Rajasthan Royals, while Jacobs was a bargain for the Mumbai Indians at $190,000.

The difference in money doesn't bother Jacobs at all. "My base price was $20, 000 so I took a massive leap. To be honest, I would have gone for free," he told ESPNCricinfo. Jacobs made a name for himself in the Champions League Twenty20 last year, where he scored 286 runs in six matches at an average of 47.66, and led the Warriors to the final. "I got the opportunity to play in the IPL because of my performance in the Champions League, I wouldn't have got anywhere without it."

Jacobs hoped his CLT20 performances would help him earn a national call up, but he has so far been ignored. Now, he thinks if he performs well in the IPL, it might earn him a chance to wear the green and gold. "I want to play for South Africa, but I know I couldn't have played better than I did in the CLT20. I am going to put the Warriors and the Mumbai Indians first and hope I can get there. There's no point planning it anymore."

As an opening batsman, there is the real possibility that Jacobs will get to partner Sachin Tendulkar. "I've had people tweeting me saying I may be opening the batting with Sachin Tendulkar. I've never met him but it will be awesome. The whole world looks at this guy. When I was a boy, he was playing Test cricket and he is still going." Jacobs did not keep in the CLT20 because Mark Boucher was in the side, but he is an able wicketkeeper and would do the job if called on.

"I'll bat anywhere or do anything. I just want to make the most of my chance."

He is known for his lively personality on the South African domestic circuit, and said he will try to bring some of that to Mumbai. "I just want to add what I can add. I will bring the same passion and desire that I have at the Warriors."

Botha received his news in a more measured fashion. He admitted to being surprised about his high price tag. "It's a massive surprise and these types of things are life-changing but with that comes responsibility." He has had a season in the IPL before, also at the Royals and he is pleased to be back at the same franchise. "I enjoyed my time with them before. I got along well with Warnie [Shane Warne] and the coaching staff. It's a nice to go back to a team where you were before."

The South African T20 captain is concentrating on the current one-day international series against India and the World Cup before turning his attention to the IPL. "There is a lot of cricket before IPL4. I'm sure once we get there we will give 100% for our teams."
